Voss Winery and Vineyards

A perfect choice as part of any wine club or even as a gift for your favorite wine lover, especially if they are a fan of Sauvignon Blanc. Originally opened by Australian winemaker Robert Hill Smith who started by making wine in 1991, Hill Smith is a 5th generation winemaker (yes they do exist) who hails from the Yalumba Winery in Australia’s Barossa region. The Voss Vineyard started with forty eight acres in Rutherford, but went against the grain in 1996 by not planting a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, they instead chose to plant a combination of Sauvignon Blanc (the new darling white wine grape in the region), Syrah and Viognier. As you might expect, they have been active in the California Rhone Rangers organization for some time as well, given their plantings of Syrah.

With eight thousand cases in total production as well as some truly high scoring Sauvignon Blanc, Voss has quickly become at the top of consumers minds for the Sauvignon Blanc varietal. It has performed so well both critically and according to consumers that Voss Vineyards now focuses on Sauvignon Blanc exclusively. Given the amount of competition in Napa Valley for red wine purchases, this seems to make sense on a number of levels.
